How to use Spotify statistics to build a music marketing strategy

Many artists have a mental block when it comes to studying their metrics and statistics. We’re artists, after all, not mathematicians. But understanding your metrics will allow you to convert that knowledge into an effective music marketing strategy.

It’s much more interesting and simpler than you may think, and it will help you increase your followers week on week.

Three ways Spotify stats help your music marketing strategy

  • Create targeted ads

Log in to your Spotify for Artists profile and click “audience” in the menu at the top of your screen. The first section is a graph showing how your listenership has grown over the past month. Look for patterns. On what day of the week are people listening to your music the most? Schedule social media posts for those days.

Scroll down to find key information about your listeners, such as their gender, age, location, and (crucially) what other artists they listen to.  Use this information to create targeted social media ads specifically for the demographic of listeners your music attracts.

  • Track how your promotions are performing

Click “music” in the menu at the top of your screen in Spotify for Artists. There you will how many streams, listeners, and saves each song has had over the past 7 days. If you have created a promotion for one of your tracks, you’ll be able to see how many people responded to it in the past week.

Test out different promos with different songs to analyse which method works best for you, and adapt your music marketing strategy accordingly. Was your audio ad a success? How did it compare with your Facebook ad? Which is more cost effective? Your statistics will help you answer these questions.

  • Find which tracks are gaining traction and create promos for them

You might be surprised to find that some of your older tracks are gaining popularity. Staying on the “music” page of your Spotify for Artist profile, look at which tracks have the most saves. If one of your tracks appears to be gaining traction, ride the wave and create a promo for that track to optimise its success.
