Drum and Bass Track from Scratch in Logic Pro x

Lockdown round 3.... it's time for another track from scratch in logic as voted by the channel subscribers. In this one we begin with the infamous Amen break an chop it up in logic. I show you how to make it into its own custom kit so that walkability is literally only limited by your imagination.

Track from scratch logic LD3 Part 2 - Logic Drum Synth
In this video we carry one with our chopped up Amen break, If you haven't watch that part yet it's here - https://youtu.be/uQTQ8E5wiDg Making use of the Logic drum synth we layer it up with the kick and snare of the chopped amen break, And make use of its synth functionality to tune the kick with the track and make the snare pop just where is needed.

Track from scratch logic LD3 Part 3 - DnB Breaks
In this part of the track from scratch... its part 3 btw. Were making our Amen break into a whole drum breaky beast. We use drummer ot add some nice stereo polish tops, Found a cheeky shaker loop. And figured out a simple but effective loop that works over 16 bars but remains interesting enough at key points, altering minorly about every 4 bars.

In this video we carry on our track from scratch in logic pro x, Im looking to add some pad feels like Mohican Sun to carry behind the break in the track. But first we need a chord structure to work with, Chords with no theory in logic pro is pretty easy. I like to work chords out on the keys now. But I used to have to point and click and I was once unsure on my theory too, So let's look at a wicked way to easily build up some chords with no music theory needed.

Part 5 already. In this section of our track from scratch I have a browse around alchemy presets and find a couple of melody ideas to fit into the track, The melody is a simple variant on the chord structure so far, Allowing for a wall of sound type feel as everything begins to sync up. Watch out for using the arpeggiator in alchemy, often overlooked how quickly you can enhance a melody using that.

This episode we focus on making a nice dnb bass in logic's Alchemy synth. That it really, I end up taking the default preset and shaping it to the track to be a reesey gritten warm fuzzy wuzzy slidey bass.

In this video I dive into my tip on how to avoid beat block while we build up the intro to the track, This is actually on of the tips on avoiding beat block and not being stuck in the producers loop.

Part 8 already of this track from from scratch in logic, We continue to work on the introduction of the track, bringing up the tension and suspense as we build that anticipation to the main section.

Turning Chords into Melody in Logic Pro X for part 9 of our track from scratch in logic, This time I want to show you a couple ways to find the melody hiding in your track. Sometime I start with a melody in my head and that is where the track builds from. In this instance we built from the drums and the melody is somewhere to be found in the chords.

How to Organise a Session in Logic Pro X is an essential part of our track from scratch, were at 60+ channels already with our mad break chopping shenanigans. And were having some headroom issues so need to sort up some of our gain staging, An organised the colours as well renaming and mixer order with buses in our Logic pro session. Before we overwhelm ourselves in a mess of mismatched midi.

Part 11 bass automation in logic pro with alchemy is where we went here. mostly. Linking the cutoff, Resonance and two filter drives into automation lanes. This helped us to create the next phase of the track, A classic tear back to just the drums and bass. With the bass automation twisting and taking focus for this short section.

Riiight here we go part 12. Basically right in the video we look at, How to make sweeps in logic pro. But also dive into the transitions and setting up the break down. Ive also renamed an coloured all the parts of the Amen, But i did that off camera as it's basically like watching paint dry. Anyways enjoy making white noise sweeps with alchemy and stuff.

Creative mixing phase. I call this the creative mix stage anyway. You see in the classic, record a bunch of stuff an mix it. Sound design has kind of already happened and its mostly about getting a great balance and tone. Fixing problem you might say. Well in the way we work for electronic music production is we mostly design the sounds. Now I focus on writing and getting the sound roughly where I want it as to keep working quickly. This stage here I get set up with any ideas im having for sound design. So its my creative mix phase not the fix it mix phase.
